Day 6 – Bryce Canyon, Escalante, Hogsback, Torrey, Durango

30 05 2007

Yippee! Yea! Ya-Who! Holy Crap! Oh My God!!!!  Those were but a few of the things coming out of my helmet today as we went through the money road we rode all way down here for.  Words cannot describe the splendor, beauty and shear exhilaration for most of the riding today. Do you go fast through the turns or slow down for the majestic scenery. You almost need to run it twice to do both.

So lets back up a little bit and talk about how the day started. Bong insists we leave at the crack of morning – 6:30AM and ride for 100 miles before stopping for breakfast. I thought he was pulling my leg until the knock come on our hotel door at 6AM telling us to get going. We were packed and out of the room at 6:30, but by the time we checked out and gassed up we weren’t on the road until 7AM. Still- that’s pretty darn early. And did I mention it was cold – IT WAS COLD!  My thermometer on the bike said 30 degrees, the lady at the checkout desk said 27 degrees! Geez, we were just in the desert yesterday wearing just shorts and t-shirt under my stich suit, today I’m donning long underwear, wool socks and an electric liner. And my heated grips are on high.

We headed out Rt 12 through Tropic, Henrieville through Escalante and into Torrey before even having breakfast. We stopped at the one and only local hotel restaurant place for good eats Utah style.

Oh, and poor Steve is still stuck in Salt Lake City with a busted bike. Even though the Honda dealer in Salt Lake said the part was going to be over-nighted to him, turns out Honda doesn’t have the part in stock anywhere and it would be a month before they could get. Steve being the resourceful guy that most life long motorcycle enthusiasts at got on the internet and used his VFR forum connection to find an aftermarket unit which is being shipped to him in Salt Lake. We hope he can find a part and intercept us on the way home.

Tomorrow we turn north and start our journey home.

Teaser picture from the day, more to follow later.

Does’t Bong ususally have 100 miles in by 7 am?

I used my electric gear heading home from Ontario, but it wasn’t 30 degrees out. (I get cold easily, I’m a whimp).

This is certainly part of the trip that I really wanted to do.
